Aquariums

Aquariums – screen tops are NOT recommended
Here is how we make glass aquariums suitable as snake enclosures. A screen top causes too much heat and humidity loss out the top often resulting in significant dehydration of the occupant. So we turn them sideways and make plexiglass doors.

Attach a strip of plexiglass to the plastic frame of the tank on each side with epoxy.  Then we drill holes and attach hinges and latches with small #6 bolts and nuts.  This makes the inside environment much more stable.  As you can see in this picture placing the water dish partially on top of the under tank heater causes evaporation high enough to cause condensation of the side.  That creates a wonderful humid environment while keeping the substrate dry or only slightly damp.  This type of set up is very helpful for snake with shed issues or other reasons for high humidity.  To lower the humidity simply move the water dish off to the cold side so less water evaporates.  Don’t forget to use a thermostat to control your heaters and digital thermometers and hygrometers to keep track of the conditio
