Reticulated python: Python reticulatus
Burmese python: Python Bivittatus
These giant snakes are not recommended as pets for anyone but the most experienced keepers. They are often purchased from breeders as tiny babies by people that have not researched their long term needs and size potential. Some of these giants can grow to more than 20 feet long.
Special permits may be required in some areas for private individuals to keep these large constrictors as pets and many cities have size restrictions prohibiting any snake over 6 feet.
Here at Snake Haus we tend to agree that permits should be required for these animals because we have seen first hand the sad effects that poor husbandry and inadequate housing can have on these majestic giants. They are often left neglected in horrible conditions because their owner was not prepared for their size and needs.
With the proper training and tools these animals can make safe rewarding pets but they are NOT for the faint of heart and MUST BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
Retics vs Burms

The reticulated and Burmese pythons are two of the largest snake species in the world and co-habitate in the same native environments. Despite this they are very different. The retics tend to be long and lean while the burms are very stocky. The retics are more active and reactive. The burms like to watch and wait. The retics have the greater size potential long term. A female retic will ultimately outgrow a female burm, but it will take her longer to reach that giant size than the burm.

The video below shows what it takes to keep the giants. This is a mainland retic who is very shy. It takes great patience to coax her into coming out of her enclosure. She is so big we have to get her out in order to clean up all the water she spilled in her enclosure. If you don’t feel prepared to handle a snake like what you see in this video you should NOT get a mainland retic.
